EUROPEAN RESEARCH COUNCIL: BEYOND THE FIRST 10 YEARS

Last March 21st, the European Research Council (ERC) celebrated its 10th anniversary with a conference series, round tables and a celebratory event.

The event was opened by the ERC President, Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, and was attended by Prof. Jerzy Buzek, Chair of the ITRE Committee, Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Robert-Jan Smits, Directorate-General for Research and Innovation and Pablo Amor, Director of the ERCEA.

During the conference series, over fifteen ERC grantees presented their ambitious projects of different scientific areas.

The evening celebratory event was opened with a video-message of Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission. The beginnings of ERC were recalled, and impact and future challenges of fundamental research in Europe were brought into focus.

The celebration was closed by Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon and surprised the assistants with LaserMan’s illusionist performance, followed by the 10th anniversary’s cake and the cocktail reception.
